Supporting Indonesia’s Geothermal Ambitions
As Indonesia accelerates the development of its vast geothermal resources, industry stakeholders gathered in Jakarta on August 13 for the Vallourec Geothermal Workshop, an event dedicated to addressing the technical and operational challenges of geothermal project deployment. Hosted by Vallourec’s subsidiary in Indonesia, PT Citra Tubindo, the workshop brought together more than 30 participants from across the geothermal value chain, including operators, developers, drilling contractors, oilfield service companies, and regulators.
The event took place just days before the International Indonesia Geothermal Convention & Exhibition (IIGCE) 2026 and reflected a shared ambition: helping Indonesia achieve its target of 5.2 GWe of installed geothermal power capacity by 2034. For developers and operators, reaching this objective will require reliable, cost-effective well solutions capable of withstanding some of the industry’s most demanding operating conditions.
Combining Global Expertise with Local Presence
With more than 30 years of experience supporting geothermal developments worldwide, Vallourec showcased how its expertise can help unlock geothermal opportunities across Southeast Asia. The company highlighted its long-standing regional footprint through PT Citra Tubindo in Batam, Indonesia, which provides local manufacturing, threading, inspection, storage and tubular management capabilities.
Throughout the workshop, participants explored the technical challenges facing conventional hydrothermal projects, as well as emerging Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) and Advanced Geothermal Systems (AGS). Discussions focused on how well integrity, drilling efficiency and long-term asset performance can be optimized.
Addressing Well Integrity Challenges in High-Temperature Geothermal Wells
A significant portion of the workshop was dedicated to well integrity, a critical factor in ensuring the profitability and longevity of geothermal assets.
Vallourec experts highlighted how geothermal wells face extreme conditions compared to conventional oil and gas operations, including temperatures reaching up to 350°C, thermal fatigue, scaling and corrosion. These conditions can significantly increase the risk of casing failures if the well architecture is not designed appropriately.
To address these challenges, Vallourec presented its proprietary high-collapse casing grades, including VM80 HC and VM110 HC, which are specifically designed to withstand the collapse loads commonly encountered in geothermal applications.
The company shared results demonstrating how these solutions can substantially increase collapse resistance compared with traditional geothermal casing materials, helping operators improve well integrity and reduce the risk of costly failures.
Premium Connections Qualified for Geothermal Conditions
The workshop also showcased Vallourec’s premium connection technologies, including VAM®21 and DWC-C IS, developed to meet the demanding mechanical and thermal requirements of geothermal wells.
Unlike conventional oil and gas applications, geothermal wells experience repeated thermal cycling that subjects tubular connections to intense compression and tension loads throughout their lifecycle. Vallourec presented its qualification work based on the Thermal Well Casing Connection Evaluation Protocol (TWCCEP), demonstrating that key VAM®21 geothermal casing sizes have been qualified up to 350°C.
The company also shared field-proven experiences from geothermal projects around the world, including installations in Indonesia where VAM®21 connections successfully operated in wells reaching temperatures above 300°C while delivering efficient running performance and zero rejects during installation.
Corrosion Management and Material Selection
Geothermal fluids often contain corrosive compounds that can significantly impact asset reliability and operating expenditures. To help customers address these risks, Vallourec presented its material selection capabilities, including corrosion modelling, laboratory testing and fit-for-purpose qualification programs.
Participants learned how Vallourec supports operators in selecting the optimal material and corrosion-resistant solution based on specific well conditions, helping maximize asset life while optimizing total cost of ownership.
Enhancing Operational Efficiency Beyond the Well
In addition to products and technologies, the workshop demonstrated how operational services can contribute to safer, more efficient geothermal project execution.
Vallourec demonstrated its Tubular Management Services (TMS), a comprehensive offering that combines storage, logistics, handling, inspection, inventory management and digital traceability. These services are designed to improve operational efficiency, save project costs by reducing non-product time (NPT), and provide full visibility of tubular assets from the pipe yard to remote drilling locations.
The workshop also featured TallyVision, Vallourec’s digital tally solution, which enables real-time tracking of tubulars during drilling operations. By digitalizing pipe identification and running data, TallyVision helps reduce non-productive time, improve traceability and support more efficient project execution.
Looking Toward the Next Generation of Geothermal Energy
Beyond today’s hydrothermal developments, discussions also explored the future of geothermal through Enhanced Geothermal Systems and Advanced Geothermal Systems.
Participants reviewed case studies involving deep, high-temperature EGS developments and innovative closed-loop geothermal concepts supported by Vallourec’s THERMOCASE® Vacuum Insulated Tubing technology. These solutions are helping developers improve heat recovery, optimize energy production and unlock geothermal resources in areas previously considered inaccessible.
