In a move to foster expertise in the burgeoning field of deep geothermal systems, Vallourec is sponsoring the 2024-2025 Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) Deep Geothermal System (DEEGEOSYS) at DeeGeoSys at the Centre for Hydrogeology and Geothermics (CHYN), University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland.

This sponsorship underscores Vallourec’s commitment to advancing geothermal energy and supporting the development of skilled professionals in the sector.

The CAS Deep Geothermal System, now in its 7th edition, is a comprehensive four-week training program (separated by two-month breaks) running from September 2024 to March 2025. Hosted by the Centre for Hydrogeology and Geothermics, this program aims to address the scarcity of specialists in deep geothermal systems across Europe. Geared towards scientists and engineers with a background in earth sciences or engineering, the CAS DEEGEOSYS equips participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to spearhead exploration and development projects for deep geothermal resources, including deep aquifers and Enhanced Geothermal Systems.

The program features modules covering geothermics, geophysics, geochemistry, hydrochemistry, drilling techniques, reservoir evaluation, and production methodologies. Participants will benefit from lectures delivered by industry experts from leading geothermal companies and universities, offering invaluable insights and practical knowledge. Additionally, the program includes site visits to operational geothermal plants, providing participants with firsthand exposure to real-world applications.

One of the distinguishing features of the CAS DEEGEOSYS is the involvement of Vallourec’s own experts. Maximilien de Maisonneuve, Vallourec’s Geothermal Director, and François Penven, Geothermal Marketing and Development Manager, both completed the program in its previous edition (2022-2023) and obtained their certificates.

In this new edition, François Penven will serve as a lecturer in one of its modules, focusing on drilling and logging techniques, sharing expertise on topics such as well loads, casing standards, and casing failure modes specific to geothermal wells.

Vallourec’s sponsorship of the CAS DEEGEOSYS reflects its strategic interest in the development of geothermal energy in Europe. As countries like Germany, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, and the UK increasingly embrace geothermal as a sustainable energy source, there is a pressing need to cultivate a skilled workforce in this field.

By supporting initiatives like the CAS Deep Geothermal System, Vallourec aims to contribute to the expansion of the geothermal industry while simultaneously fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the geothermal community”, explains Maximilien de Maisonneuve, Geothermal Director.

Moreover, Vallourec’s involvement in the program provides an opportunity to stay abreast of emerging trends in geothermal research and regulations, particularly concerning well design—a crucial aspect of geothermal project success.

Drawing on over 30 years of experience in developing solutions for geothermal projects, Vallourec offers a diverse range of products designed to address the unique challenges associated with geothermal drilling and exploitation. From high-temperature and corrosion resistance to well integrity, Vallourec’s tubular solutions are tailored to meet the specific demands of geothermal applications, ensuring optimal performance and cost efficiency.

By supporting initiatives like the CAS DEEGEOSYS, Vallourec hopes to contribute to the growth of the geothermal industry as well as strengthen its position as a trusted partner for geothermal projects worldwide.
