Au centre de la plan\u00e8te, les temp\u00e9ratures d\u00e9passent 5\u202f000\u202f\u00b0C, et pr\u00e8s de 99\u202f% du volume terrestre affiche des temp\u00e9ratures sup\u00e9rieures \u00e0 1\u202f000\u202f\u00b0C. Cette chaleur se r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e8re en permanence, ce qui fait de l\u2019\u00e9nergie issue de la g\u00e9othermie une ressource renouvelable \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle humaine.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Malgr\u00e9 ce potentiel consid\u00e9rable, la g\u00e9othermie ne repr\u00e9sente aujourd\u2019hui qu\u2019\u00e0 peine 1\u202f% du mix \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique mondial. Notre capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 acc\u00e9der \u00e0 cette chaleur reste en effet limit\u00e9e \u00e0 une infime fraction de la cro\u00fbte terrestre, dont l\u2019\u00e9paisseur est d\u2019environ 30\u202fkilom\u00e8tres. Ce gradient thermique varie toutefois fortement en fonction des conditions g\u00e9ologiques et g\u00e9ographiques, et peut atteindre jusqu\u2019\u00e0 13,5\u202f\u00b0C tous les 100\u202fm\u00e8tres dans des r\u00e9gions g\u00e9ologiquement actives comme l\u2019Islande. Les syst\u00e8mes g\u00e9othermiques conventionnels exploitent les zones o\u00f9 cette chaleur est naturellement accessible, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des formations rocheuses perm\u00e9ables satur\u00e9es en saumures chaudes. Dans ces syst\u00e8mes hydrothermaux, un puits de production achemine le fluide chaud vers la surface afin de produire de l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 ou de la chaleur, tandis qu\u2019un puits d\u2019injection renvoie le fluide refroidi en profondeur, afin de garantir la p\u00e9rennit\u00e9 du r\u00e9servoir. Cette perm\u00e9abilit\u00e9 est obtenue au moyen de techniques de stimulation contr\u00f4l\u00e9es, qui g\u00e9n\u00e8rent des r\u00e9seaux de fractures artificielles, afin de permettre au fluide de circuler entre les puits et de r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer la chaleur stock\u00e9e dans les formations profondes. Une fois la stimulation achev\u00e9e, la circulation du fluide devient efficace, et rend possible la production d\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 dans des zones auparavant inadapt\u00e9es au d\u00e9veloppement de la g\u00e9othermie.
